1. Project Background
The Hay Point coal terminal was replacing its existing ship loader and refurbishing the wharf structure. A new luffing boom ship loader was to be supplied, and part of that supply was the luffing winch and platform. The design was to incorporate a range of new safety and operability features over previous designs. The winch mechanism was supplied from Germany and Italy, the winch drums were fabricated in Sydney, and the steel fabrication and final assembly was in Perth.
2. Challenge
The project required the integration of components from multiple international and domestic suppliers, and the design needed to meet new safety and operability standards. There were also significant challenges in designing the interface between the luffing platform and the ship loader, ensuring the transmitted forces at the interfaces were properly managed.
3.Solution
CMP Engineers worked with Dana Brevini from the concept stage to develop the overall layout of the luffing winch and the design load calculations. CMP Engineers took on the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) role for the drum, mechanical mechanisms, ship loader structure, and luffing winch platform. Mechanical and structural steel drafting was also provided. The team performed a review of the structural and mechanical design to ensure compliance with relevant standards, OHS, and site requirements. Meetings were held throughout the design period to resolve issues arising from interfacing the luffing winch with the ship loader. During manufacture, CMP Engineers provided additional engineering support for materials approvals, testing and welding procedures, and guidance on manufacturing and fabrication processes.
